Revised Health Insurance Premiums

Nov 19, 2024 | News

In 2020, under the visionary leadership of His Excellency Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the Kwara State Health Insurance Scheme (KwaraCare) was launched. This transformative initiative aimed to provide affordable, quality healthcare to all residents, particularly the most vulnerable. It has served as a lifeline, especially during critical moments like the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring equitable access to essential healthcare services.

Rising Healthcare Costs: A Challenge

Over the past few years, the cost of drugs, consumables, and medical services has escalated significantly, with prices nearly quadrupling since the pandemic. Despite the government’s steadfast commitment to subsidizing premiums and maintaining affordability, these rising costs have placed immense strain on the scheme, pushing it into deficits.

The situation demands urgent action to ensure the sustainability of KwaraCare and its ability to continue delivering high-quality healthcare services to all enrollees.

New Premium Structure: Effective December 1, 2024

To address these challenges and maintain the integrity of the scheme, the Kwara State Government has approved an upward revision of health insurance premiums. The new premium structure is as follows:

  • Informal Sector Premium: ₦15,500 per person per year
  • Formal Sector Premium: ₦18,000 per person per year
  • Family Package for the Informal Sector (6 Members): ₦75,000 per year
  • Family Package for the Formal Sector (6 Members): ₦87,000 per year

These adjustments are necessary to align with current economic realities while continuing to offer accessible and quality healthcare to Kwara residents.

Why This Revision Matters

The Kwara State Health Insurance Scheme remains one of the most affordable healthcare plans in Nigeria. By paying a flat annual premium, enrollees can access comprehensive healthcare services, including consultations, investigations, treatments, surgeries, and medications, without the financial burden of out-of-pocket expenses.

Even with the revised rates, the scheme is heavily subsidized, ensuring that residents continue to enjoy significantly reduced costs compared to market rates.
